SEPTEMBER highlights

Image

sept
Like pretty much all of this year ,September has proved to be an exciting and eventful month. Each month brings so much excitement and new opportunities , that often I am left rather pleasantly surprised.Durban welcomed Spring in all its glory but we did skip ahead and Mother Nature gave us a taste of Summer.

I decided to round up my highlights of yet another month 🙂

1)COOKIE SWAP , am sure you all are aware of this amazing event I was asked to host last month.Alot of time was spent emailing and getting sponsors and getting the event ready.

2)The lovely Yasantha Naidoo a Sunday Times social reporter contacted me before Cookie Swap and asked if she could cover the event.Instantly I said YES and this lead to another highlight of me featuring in the Sunday Times and been called a “social media fundi”And yes mum got several phone calls and bought a few extra copies of the paper.

3)I attended the Eastern Bridal Fair which was amazing on so many levels. Check out an earlier post.AND YES I want to get married.

4)In JULY I was mentioned in a tweet that @RevlonSA put out about a Durban Cosmo Cover Girl event and within two minutes Maheshree and I booked the event. The event was a sold out event with limited numbers. To my surprise I was invited to attend by Revlon at the start of the month as their guest.Wohoo I was super excited and sold my paid for ticket to my friend Megan who really wanted to attend. It was such a day of glamour and fun.

5)VIVID LUXURY , this amazing PR company based in CAPE TOWN and JHB contacted me via Spicegoddess to ask if I could do a post on their Durban event of PINOTAGE ON TAP. I was gobsmacked that my humble blog was approached by such an amazing company.

6)As a Hindu , September signifies the start of our month long fast.During this month we abstain from eating all forms of meat and no alcohol. Its a very religious month of prayer.

7)I had my first radio interview. At the GFWS I met Avashnee Vandiar is popular and much loved Radio personality from a local Indian station.I recieved an SMS from her three weeks ago asking if she could call me later that evening for an interview. I was taken aback but said yes and we settled on a time. When Avashnee called it was like chatting to an old friend BUT I was super nervous. The interview was about my POUT movement and my role as an Ambassador. The pre recorded interview was aired this week and I will post the podcast link soon.

8)My lovely Twitter friend @irinadoman who I have never met with and only communicated with on Twitter, visited her parents in Russia and sent my a bag of Russian goodies including chocolate, tea and a snow globe of the Kremlin.

So as you can see SEPTEMBER was rather eventful 🙂 but I am loving it.Heres to the rest of the year been just as amazing .

TMG

A few weeks ago my friend Kaveshan Chetty called me and we had a chat about creating a website for bloggers.Three weeks later this has become a reality.

So what is TMG ?

TMG is a magazine style blog which serves as a platform to showcase the work of bloggers thus giving them exposure to brands. I as a blogger know how difficult it is to get noticed by a brand. That is why TMG MAKES SENSE !

TMG launched 14 July 2013 with a Facebook page and a Twitter handle.

A week later we had over 33 blog posts and 5 guest bloggers busy sending in daily contributions. The site is updated daily with new blog posts and a daily picture of the day taken by a photo blogger.

TMG is going places watch this space:)

Last Wednesday my amazing cousin Karmani surprised me with a one day visit. I havent seen Karms since last Decemeber so its been pretty long.We chat on a regular basis via Twitter and Whatsapp keeping uptodate with the happenings of our lives .Karms is Dad and my late Dad are 1st cousins so that makes are 2nd cousins. But regardless we are super close and her lovely brother Whelan and I share our birthday.

So on Wednesday afternoon we sat in the kitchen and had a major long catch up session on our work , our vision for our future, my blogging, her DJ career, our planned holiday abroad as well as recalling past memories. It was such a feel good session and much needed for my soul. As Karmani often says our grandkids are going to listen to our stories and think wow are grandmothers are truly LEGENDARY 🙂

I am truly blessed to have such an inspirational cousin in my life who has believed in my blogging and forsees so much more in my future. Thank you Karmani for been so awesome, loving and a true LEGEND .

Smitten by BITTEN

Standard

Last year I was pretty lucky to win a signed copy of this amazing cookbook by Sarah Graham. The simplicity and set up of this cookbook caught my attention immediately.
Sarah Graham started a food blog called http://afoodieliveshere.co.za , the blog lead to the cookbook and that has now lead to the amazingly delightful cookery show called BITTEN.I am totally smitten by this cookery show and believe me I watch loads of them. The show is screened every Sunday at 4pm on SABC 3 for thirty minutes of pure foodie heaven. Sarah looks amazing and cooks the most charming dishes each with a little story while introducing us to her home, family and friends. Her kitchen makes me so jealous as it has amazing dishes from Le Creuset , Yuppie Chef and Nomu spices.
BITTEN the cookbook is wow .The pictures, recipes; hints are so appealing and user friendly. This book is must food bible for those who love food and sharing it with their friends and family. Sarah has showcased a few popular South African Food Bloggers and included a recipe from each of them. Some of these are bloggers are my favourites whom I follow on Twitter:
Jane Anne Hobbs –Rayner (SCRUMPTIOUS) http://whatsforsupper-juno.blogspot.com

Alida Ryder (SIMPLY DELICIOUS) http://simply-delicious.co.za/

Nina Timm (MY EASY COOKING) http://www.my-easy-cooking.com

I totally love all the basic tips for cooking /baking and the conversion tables. Each recipe has a little story to it as well as hints and tips. Sarah has also put together a list of meal options for a month at the back of the cookbook with the necessary page numbers so easy peasy. This book makes you want to jump into the kitchen and start baking and cooking. Most of the ingredients used in the recipes are easy to source and already found in the home.

My favourite recipe by far is Grilled Lamb Chops with Lemon & Rosemary Oil.So I have decided to include this recipe in my blog I will be making these and a few more recipes over my winter holiday.HERE IS THE RECIPE :

Serves 4 | Preparation time 10 minutes | Cooking time 15 minutes

WHAT YOU’LL NEED
2-3 Tbsp olive oil
1 Tbsp butter (optional)
zest and juice of 1 lemon
1 clove garlic, crushed
1 Tbsp finely chopped fresh rosemary
½ tsp salt and freshly ground black pepper
4 lamb chops, about 200 g each
WHAT TO DO
1. Preheat the oven’s grill to its highest setting (or get your braai/bbq ready)

2. In a pestle and mortar, crush the lemon zest, rosemary, garlic, salt and pepper together. Mix in the butter and spread this evenly over the chops before
placing them in a shallow oven-proof dish.

3. Grill the chops for 5-6 minutes on each side, or until cooked but still pink in the middle.

So do yourself a favour watch BITTEN on SUNDAY SABC 3 at 4PM. This beautifully produced cookery show will feed your senses and make you think you are watching an overseas production. WELL DONE Sarah and your production team on an amazing production.
My favourite quote from the book “In our kitchens we are never alone; we have memories, happy and sad “
I hope now you understand why I am SMITTEN BY BITTEN

1st Giveaway Original Cocktails

Standard

A few weeks ago I was approached by Original Iced Cocktails, if I would be interested in hosting a giveaway.
Well….. Considering how much I love cocktails I instantly agreed.

I was really lucky to recipe a hamper for me to giveaway as well as some goodies for me to sample which included a delish box of Strawberry Daiquiri and another of an amazing winter warmth box of Gluhwein. The Gluhwein immediately brought me memories of drinking this during Christmas with friends in London. Gluhwein is made from red wine and spices are added cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves give this lovely drink a comforting aroma when it is served heated.I have made this one on my own ages ago but no longer will I need to do this as this yummy drink is now premade and ready for me to drink 🙂

I love pink drinks so no wonder, I was sent the Strawberry Daiquiri. This delicious cocktail is made from real fruit juice (wondering if this will count for my 5 a day ) . The history of this drink is that it is the name of a beach near Santiago in Cuba, where this drink is said to have originated. A Daiquiri is made from real Strawberry and Lime juice which is then blended with light Rum. While writing this I am starting to get thirsty lol.

I believe cocktails can be drunk all year round:-) I am the kinda girl who loves going for cocktails on a Sunday.

Living in the beautiful city of Durban even winter days are still perfect for drinking cocktails.

So here comes the giveaway 🙂

I have a party pack of Original Iced Cocktails to give to 6 lucky people. Included in the pack ar the following cocktails Margarita, Pina Colada, Mojito, Singapore Sling, Strawberry Daiquiri and a Cosmopolitan. I decided to split the pack so I can spread the love.

So here is how you can enter :

1) Follow me on Twitter @verushka143 and @Original_Iced

2) Subscribe to my blog via email

3)Tweet this I love Cocktails and would love to win with @verushka143 and @Original_Iced

4) Comment on this blog telling me you have done all of the above
