The #DBNbloggermeet event.

Standard

In January 2014, I was asked about arranging an event for Durban lady bloggers. Having worked on Cookie Swap last year, I do know how much of time, work and effort goes into an event. I sat on the fence until I approached Michelle and Nicola to come on board as part of the team. It was a constant arrival of emails, tweets, whatsapps on a daily basis and now that the event is over I miss it 😦

As soon as we tweeted about the possibility of an event did we get the Durban ladies saying yes and how excited they were. Our next point of business was picking a date and a venue (read about Hashtag).

The team pooled our contacts together and started working on sponsors. Never in my wildest dreams did I think we would have so many generous and amazing sponsors come on board for our event. It was only when we got to Michelle’s house to pack did we realise how much stuff we actually had. And yes it was like an Oprah moment creating 25 bags of treats/gems for our bloggers.

The status quo is that Durban and Durban bloggers are not considered for product launches BUT after this event this weekend I am sure its going to change!  The hashtag #DBNbloggermeet trended in South Africa as well as #LoveYourLenovo.

The much anticipated day arrived and Durban pulled out all stops in terms of fab weather. Joining us for the event were 3 of our sponsors and Mandy from Kitten Action the charity we decided to support. Our venue hosts, Hashtag were so generous that we were not charged anything for our food and drinks and it was then we decided to support Kitten Action by donating kitten food and R50 per blogger to her charity.

Prior to the event Uber ran a twitter competition and gave away a luxury VIP pick up and drop off to the event. This got all the ladies tweeting and wanting to be spoilt. Little did the ladies know how much spoils they were in for. At the start of event, Mandy told us about the charity we were supporting and how our contributions would help. This was very touching and thank you to all our lovely ladies for supporting especially Shirley who was very generous.

Then Carly and Monique from Lenovo who had flown in especially from JHB to join us chatted to us. Carly explained to us about the amazing giveaway they were going to run at the event and give away their new Yoga Tablet. We were asked to tweet what would we do to win. For once it was not considered anti social as we all were glued to our phones. I will be reviewing the Yoga Tablet soon, so I won’t be sharing any info on the product now. The response and tweets were amazing that Lenovo surprised us by giving away not 1 BUT 2 Tablets.

Brett from Frys Foods joined us telling us about their products and importance of meat free Mondays.

Karen from Philospica Botanic spoke to us about their products and soon to be opening Spa in Durban.

Then it was time for food, laughs and lots more talking and tweeting. Throughout the morning, giveaways were taking place and every lady went away with a gift. And then the most anticipated moment our hidden huge LeCreuset bright orange goodie bags were brought out.

It was heartwarming to see how excited the ladies were and their squeals of joy discovering LeCreuset goodies. The #DBNbloggermeet was a great event meeting new and old blogging friends.

A big thank you to all our generous sponsors and finally a bigger than big THANK to Michelle and Nicola my Dream Team for all your hardwork and support in making this event a success and a great day for all much love and gratitude.

Girls Night Out…

Standard

Last night I won tickets to the Lux Girls Night out at the movies. I invited my friend Megan to join me. With my crazy work times and since Megan got married last year, we haven’t spent much time together.

We have a lot in common and can chat for ages. So it made perfect sense. We arrived early and chatted non stop on our way there.

Soon as we arrived, we popped into the new Filo Frozen Yoghurt shop and tried out their delicious offerings.

Then it was off to get checked in to the event – champagne and orange juice awaited us. We were treated to Lux goodie bags and had a dress up photo booth.

I, the typical poser had to do those pics. It was at this point we both realised we didn’t even know what movie we were going to watch. Typical us chatting – up a storm. We both were unsure about the movie “The Divergent” but were rather surprised and loved it.

The soundtrack is amazing with great eye candy and amazing ink work. Before the movie while sitting there stuffing our faces with popcorn, we recalled dramas and craziness from other movies that we had watched and were hysterical.

I totally loved my evening spent with Megan. It reminded me about friendships and several lessons :

  1. Just because I don’t see/speak to you often doesn’t mean you are special to me.
  2. Friends will always have your back regardless.
  3. Only friends will fight to pay.
  4. Friends are memorykeepers .
  5. Friends care regardless situations.
  6. Laughing and crying at the same time over crazy moments with friends.

Dearest Megan, I thank you for your friendship, care and advice. Strange that we gelled instantly at work with so much common ground.

Though we don’t see each other much I appreciate the time we do spend together.

Here’s to more days out with fun, laughter and crazy stories…

Opportunities…

Standard

Most of you would recall I recently wrote my first blog post for Women24.

Last week I decided to work on a different piece which went live on their site today. I was unaware the post was even up and only did so when I got 3 beautiful emails from 3 strangers who had read the post.

The one that really touched was the lady who said I inspired her to mend her broken relationship with her dad. I felt very emotional reading those emails.

Writing the post took lots of courage and strenght, as yet again I bared my soul to the world.Check out the post and let me know….

Superwoman…

Standard

superwoman

Since my dad passed on two years ago I seem to have gained some SuperHero powers. It’s definately true what they say that we really don’t know where we summon the strength and courage when its the only choice we have.

I vividly recall dad’s funeral like it was yesterday and how I had to pull myself together and look after things – this meant I had to control my feelings and emotions .And that was where my Superwoman powers grew.

I now have a very protective trait for my immediate family and can’t tolerate others taking advantage of them since dad is no longer around.

Last night was once such example, I cried cause I was so angry, felt my pressure rise and literally wanted to punch this person in the face. It took me a while to calm down after a chat with a friend. Life has such a funny way of giving us our SuperHero powers especially when we are at our weakest, thinking its all over.

So yes I am a SuperHero aka Superwoman… I will protect my loved ones from the evil forces that are out there… I will breathe fire through my words… I will kill you with kindness and YES I am Superwoman taking over the world one day at a time.

Try to take me down and watch my wrath unleash… Be warned villans – this Superwoman means business..

Recipe for Happiness…

Standard

In December during the time of Madiba’s passing, I came out of the movies to find a most interesting email. The email was from a lovely lady who contacted me via the blog posts I had written for my dear friend Sue Levy. The email was praise for my writing especially the post Forgetting Fear.I was asked if I would be interested in a book by Cherie Roe Dirkson called Carpe Diem or Bust.

carpe_diem_rm

My response was immediately “yes” and this started a beautiful friendship between R and myself which has blossomed over emails. I now consider R my big sister as I don’t have one. So today I finally got around to paging through this book I was gifted.

IMG_20140126_00184742

I paged through the book today and instantly I was drawn to this :

The post is called “Stocking your cupboard with Happiness”.

1)Loved ones – think of all the people in your life that make living a joy.Picture their happy smiley faces and feel the effect of their love in your heart centre.

2)Play music – listen to your favourite songs that make you happy.

3)Precious memories – bring out old scrapbooks/albums. Remind yourself of how many moments you have had in your life that were full and extraordinary.

4)Encounter animals – Cats balance your aura by their purring. Pets lift our spirits.

5)Nature – go be in Nature, its calming, grounding and balancing and its FREE.

6)Count your blessings – all our basic needs of food, shelter, clothing and a healthy body are things we take for granted but we should count these as blessings.

7) Laugh your head off – watch a comedy as no one likes a sour puss so make sure your face is creased with laughter lines.

After reading these 7 pearls of Wisdom I am defo going to be stocking my cupboard this week with happiness. All of the above are so easy to do.

Thank you my sister R for gifting me this book and sharing this recipe for happiness. I hope you follow my example.

How has love month treated you ?

Arranged…

Standard

In keeping with the theme of Love Month and all my personal dramas that went down , I decided to explore a different train of thought. After re reading my favourite book I thought “arranged marriages”.

download

Instantly I know you are cringing reading this BUT, stop and listen to what I am getting at. Traditionally in many Eastern cultures and religions, arranged marriages are the norm where the bride and the groom literally meet on the day of their wedding . These matches were made by parents and astrologers. Most of these marriages do actually work as a suitable spouse is found for you according to your background – but not always. Love marriages on the other hand.. well, they too go 50/50 in terms of working.

Mum always says “What happens when love flies out the back door ?”.

So all this got me thinking, here’s me, 30-something , returned from London 4 years ago, don’t have a big social circle and not into clubbing. I work odd hours – 12 midday to 7pm and work in an environment that doesn’t allow me to meet anyone suitable. Everyone I know is married, taken or gay lol. So how does a single girl meet a decent single guy??? Yes I have tried online dating. It’s rather scary with plenty perverts with fake profiles.

Then I thought why not consider arranged marriage with a modern twist.. Who knows us better than anyone else??? Our friends and family – they know our likes, dislikes and  our dreams so why not ask them to be matchmakers? They would suggest potential suitors for you to meet for coffee and prior to this would be calls and emails and then its up to the couple to pursue this match or not.

So no its not arranged marriage but arranged dating. I am rather open to this option 🙂

Anyone out there will to take on this challenge and help me in my quest ?

Ciao
