Last week an electricity cut all day made me very uneasy as I was not able to Blog , Tweet, BBM or Whatsapp unless it as very important in attempt to save my battery life.
However my plan of action didnt last too long as i felt the need to use my phone for the numerous tasks i use it for normally. This lead to the phone dying by midday , the electricity was only due to come back on at 4PM. I then decided to read for abit then decided to spend quality time chatting with my mum and gran for about 2 hours .
During this bonding session I realised ahhh my laptop was still fully charged from the night before. So with a smile as big as a Cheshire cat i went off to get my laptop to charge my phone and my external hard drive. I then decided to to clean up my hard drive , put on a playlist and charge my phone at the same time. Wow such great multitasking skills us women have.
And then there was light Eureka , i could put my phone to charge properly and both my netbook and laptop. However it later dawned on me that evening how I am totally addicted to this digital era and how the art of conversation has become a dying art.
Its so totally evident as people can no longer hold a decent conversation. Even the learners of today write in text language and no longer use proper English… Yes I am addicted to the digital age but i can hold a conversation and I use proper English when I write.Presses the ESC KEY to end
With the tragic passing away of my baby cousin this question of Technology , i started questioning this digi age. This morning I placed an order for Flowers to be sent for the funeral on Friday .It was so hassle free and easy even the personalised message seemed so impersonal.
I later had to send an email with a message for the funeral yet again it seemed so cold and impersonal. It seems the world has become a place where we hide our emotions via a screen.I later recalled a BBM convo with Mr X about ithe possibilities of falling for someone you have never met but just had contact with over a social network. Is it really possible to fall in love with someone you have neve met just by having an email chat ? I personally have my reservations on this matter as its so easy to hide behind a screen and say things we want a person to hear/see. It is very easy to say yes me too , I love that book /movie /song . Yet when face to face it is much harder to hold a conversation and hide our facial expressions and body language. To fall for someone I believe it takes some time and a combination of communication methods to get to know a person and ultimately a face to face meeting either elevates the relationship or ends it. Just imagine trying to relay a funny story over an email or BBM or Whatsapp , there is no facial expresions no gestures and the only response one can give is a LOL and a laughing face icon. I personally am one of those people who is a Storyteller with a million stories so I dont think i could convey all these stories in just a text or email or in a Tweet .
It seems gone are the days of the art of conversations , letters and cards. Using all sorts of digital means we do hide behind a screen , its very easy to pretend to be someone else and have a conversation without the other person getting to know us.I recall as a little kiddie loving the feeling of opening a letter or card sent to me now I dont even get my cellphone account sent to me as its sent as an email. Gosh I suddenly feel old saying this but yes I miss the good old days of communication.
This then leads me onto another train of thought and the safety of using social networks. Right up till very recently there have been cases in the News of young girls meeting older men on the net posing to be younger guys. Some of these stories did not turn out well. So how safe are we really ? Is it so easy to become a different person online and create a whole different personality ,steal an image ? Sadly the answer is yes …
So hence I have come to realise that our emotions have been stolen by this New Techno Age and yes I miss the good old days…
I have a passionate love affair with books. Walking into a bookshop is my kind of Heaven. One of my dreams in life is to open a bookshop with an attached coffeeshop. The greatest gift I could be given is a book. From a very young age both my parents encouraged reading and always bought us books as kids. I often dream of having a library or a reading room in my own home filled with books I have collected over time, my own little Shangrila.
The smell of a new book is intoxicating and turning crisp clean pages a big turn on . So last night in a Tweet converstion with a friend and MC about the much acclaimed Fifty Shades of Grey Trilogy , we were both told why are we not using Kindle or an E-reader. My response was about the smell and clean crisp pages to which I was told Kindle is a crisp clean page everytime . I further prompted MC about his reasoning to which he replied he just wants people to stop chopping trees. So this got me thinking about books vs Kindle , well the merits included being able to carry around a ton of books at the same time without adding to the weight of my already heavy handbag, buying books immediately (bank balance beware), not been embaressed to buy books like Fifty Shades of Grey, books never out of stock (Onion Tears/Holy Cow), saving our environment to leave a legacy for our children are just some of the positives about switching over . Now for the cons I personally love the feel of a new book , the smell , the passing of books onto others, personal inscriptions inside books, walking into a book shop to browse, the reading of bedtime stories ……
This topic has really got me thinking since last night so thank you MC. So I guess I need to try out the kindle /E-reader/iPad as a carrier for my books. Come to think of it in Fifty Shades of Grey , Christian gives Ana an iPad will a downloaded library of classic books (how romantic !) , several of his playlists and photos of them together. I would so love a man to do that for me 🙂
In the UK last year several libraries closed down ,was this the cause of digi media taking over. I love books , but I love technology too so hence I am sitting on the fence with this one until I try one of the many digital forms of reading. So if anyone is wanting to help me figure this one out feel free to buy/give me any of the abovementioned digital items so that I could be swayed to think and act more green about my future book choices. Ciao for now my techno loving friends……….
Listening to Kelly Clarkson earler this week prompted the inspiration of this blog.So i thought about it and realised how much my life would suck without technology. Am sure all of you who have read my blogs know about my digital addiction.Indeed i would be truly lost and my life would suck without the access to technology. My handbag is a testimony to my addiction external harddrive, memory sticks and now a recent addition of a fully charged spare Blackberry battery.I kid you not i am so afraid of not been connected to the world and missing out on something.Lucky for me my friends are also very smitten with age of technology, one who recently celebrated her birthday said she would be so upset if hubby bought her jewllery when all she wanted was a new external hardrive. See guys yes we do love sparkly gifts but we are also considering digital gifts now . HI everybody my name is Verushka and yes i am addicted to the digital era.I cannot live without my phone and internet access.I did go cold turkey twice but the side effects were terrible mood swings, depression, anger, withdrawl from others are just a few of the symptoms i experienced.Though an addiction is meant to be bad i love mine and cant seem to get enough of this digital drug.ciao for now my digital addicts and in the words of Kelly Clarkson my life would suck without you
The digital bug has bitten my circle of friends and the virus is spreading daily . I am lovin the way this virus is spreading and how my friends are embracing this digital virus . We now have everyone on Blackberry BBM, 2 iPads, 2 Samsung Tablets and a netbook . All this change has taken place within a few weeks. Everyone is so keen to learn and be apart of the new techno age ! spread virus spread I am loving it. In a funny chat over tea we were discussing how if one of us became Head of our company we would issuse alll staff with tablets and laptops. The boardroom wouldhave a projector screen to watch series. Staff would be issused wih Terabite hard drives and be required to watchone hour per day at work of a series. The campus would also have a wireless internet connection with uncapped usage for downloads. AHHH the perfect work environment 🙂 The bug is defo infecting at rapid speed everyone is getting infected but loving their digital infection
Last week saw the grand finale of Masterchef SA. And what a final it was indeed. However after weeks of devoted following I missed the final and only managed to catch the last 5 minutes as a family emergency prevented me watching this.
However to those of you who have been reading my Blogs know I am very digital , so yes I PVR’d the final and followed Twitter for bits of info.
Team Deena was trending on Twitter and has a huge following from rather unexpected Tweeters. I loved the fact that though i was not actually around i could still keep in touch with the goings on of Masterchef . Well done and massive congratulations to the Spice King Deena Naidoo, Deena you stole our hearts from the first episode with your humility and compassion for your fellow competitors. Having Deena on Masterchef SA encourage tons of new viewers.Even my brother a non cooking show watching person was suddenly addicted to MCSA.The Masterchef kitchens were designed with the such stunning work stations and the most amazing digital kitchens gadgets that any foodie/digital person like myself would wish for. The use of all the gadgets also increased the shows viewrship as it then started appealing to another avenue of digital lovers. From Facebook to Twitter to the offical Masterchef online website there was an amazing amount of digital access which was so great. Twitter and Facebook have become awesome means of interacting with fellow foodies and even famous ones like Deena , Manisha Naidu , Jenny Morrison , Sophie Mitchell and even Jamie Oliver. And whats great is that these chefs respond and interact with us normal Tweeters.
It then dawned on me how the Art of cooking has changed and become so digital . Walking into any home appliance store is a total heaven for a foodie and digital geek like me . From the electronic scales , to electric biltong machines , to waffles makers to all sorts one cant escape the fact that the digi age is taking over the kitchen and yes I LOVE IT . Even recipes books have gone digital available as apps , MC would defo approve of these digital cookbooks .While trolling the millions of apps on my Samsung Tablet I came across loads of cooking and wine related apps, even tons of gaming apps appealling to the younger ones and those young at heart . I havent had a chance yet to try these out but will soon and leave a review on my favourite cooking apps.
Thank you Masterchef SA for bringing the digital age to the kitchen…… Once again awesome win Deena Naidoo in the words of a fellow tweeter @iAMKameel ” Deena is a Mammu Chef Ciao for now my foodie and digital loving friends …….!
