Partner wishlist

Standard

Every girl has a list short or long of what they would like their future partner to be like.

It starts off with wanting a man exactly like our Fathers but then changes we become teenagers to movie stars who steal our hearts. We start of wanting a man that looks like a Prince who has a million rands and how will give us the Fairytale lifestyle.

But then reality sets in and we realise that Hollywood /Bollywood has given us very high expectations of love and then we get hurt…Over the years my Partner Wishlist has changed and be redefined but this comes only with age and experiences.

I feel like Bridget Jones sitting here writing a list of what my is on my Partner Wishlist:

1) A romantic and loving guy (often end up with guys who dont know how to even spell romance and will not see a girlie movie)

2)A guy who has a career and plans for his future (I dont want no scrub )

3) A guy who has a sense of humour and can make me laugh (not make jokes about me though)

4) A guy with nice hands *blush*

5) A man who can cook (that is such a sexy quality)

So my wishlist is not too long …….So maybe like Bridget I will find Mr Darcy…. one day…..

British Addiction

Standard

I have a crazy infactuation with all things British……But dont blame me as I lived there for over ten years..

As a kid I grew up watching Mr Bean and Faulty Towers and fell in love with the British sense of humour. So when I decided to spread my wings and fly London was no surprise. In my head I had visions of snow , fog , Royal Family and Tower Bridge.During my exploration I fell more in love with Britain….

The famous pubs, museums, double decker buses and the English accent all became a normal much loved feature of my everyday life as I explored the streets of London.

Each part of Britain is so unique and delightful with its own regional dialects , customs and inhabitants. But the thing that struck me was how diverse it was and was a definate melting pot of cultures. Each of these cultural groups brought with them their traditions and food.

One of my greatest life lessons was realizing I had such a great rich culture coming from South Africa but was totally smitten by the Brits.

Now days I still watch BBC programmes , buy all things British I see in local shops, hang on to London memories and get super excited when friends there send me a care package……

Standard

A few weeks ago I was approached by Original Iced Cocktails, if I would be interested in hosting a giveaway.
Well….. Considering how much I love cocktails I instantly agreed.

I was really lucky to recipe a hamper for me to giveaway as well as some goodies for me to sample which included a delish box of Strawberry Daiquiri and another of an amazing winter warmth box of Gluhwein. The Gluhwein immediately brought me memories of drinking this during Christmas with friends in London. Gluhwein is made from red wine and spices are added cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves give this lovely drink a comforting aroma when it is served heated.I have made this one on my own ages ago but no longer will I need to do this as this yummy drink is now premade and ready for me to drink 🙂

I love pink drinks so no wonder, I was sent the Strawberry Daiquiri. This delicious cocktail is made from real fruit juice (wondering if this will count for my 5 a day ) . The history of this drink is that it is the name of a beach near Santiago in Cuba, where this drink is said to have originated. A Daiquiri is made from real Strawberry and Lime juice which is then blended with light Rum. While writing this I am starting to get thirsty lol.

I believe cocktails can be drunk all year round:-) I am the kinda girl who loves going for cocktails on a Sunday.

Living in the beautiful city of Durban even winter days are still perfect for drinking cocktails.

Vanilla

Standard

I am so totally in love with Vanilla:-) From Vanilla tea to vanilla perfume to vanilla cupcakes this flavour or scent is my addiction. To me vanilla reminds me of home baking and is very comforting,  guess thats the foodie within me speaking.

Vanilla is the second most expensive spice in the world,  after Saffron as they are labour intensive to grow.It is a flavouring derived from an Orchid.  Vanilla comes from the Spanish word Vaina meaning sheath or pod. Its not a very attractive looking spice but has a divine aroma, and those amazing blacks specks of vanila in a dessert are divine.

Until the mid 19th century,  Mexico was the chief producer of Vanilla. In 1918,  the French took this spice to Reunion Islands and Mauritius from here it was sent to Madagascar. Madagascar now accounts for a vast amount of the Vanilla grown globally.

Vanilla ice cream is the largest use of vanilla in the industry and is a very popular ice cream flavour.

I find the sweet scent of Vanilla comforting and intoxicating. …………

Whats your flavour?

Ciao

5 Favourite cooking ingredients

Standard

Every culinary person has a handful of ingredients they must have at all times in the fridge. I inherited my love of cooking from my grandmother and hence I have a very fancy palate.

These are my 5 must have/ favourite ingredients :

1) Onions, the smell of frying onions is so tempting. Its also the base for cooking most dishes. Carmelised onions give a dish such a finished taste.

2) Butter, hmm usalted or salted give any meal such a moorish taste. The thought of warm toast with melting butter.

3) Garlic, this small ingredient punches big flavour and is the basics of most Indian, Italian and Greek cookery.

4) Chicken, my favourite meat to cook can be used in so many different dishes and cooks so quickly. Not forgetting a healthy option.

5) Freshly crushed Black pepper, ohh the aroma, the slight bite and the gorgeous visible black specks transform any dish hot or cold.

What are your must haves/ favourite ingredients to cook with?

Bon Appetite

Onion Tears by Shubnum Khan

Standard

IMG00382-20120727-1725-1

I clearly recall in 2011, mum reading a review of this book and saying we must read this book.I then asked why as I had not read the review, her response was its written by an Indian girl from Durban and its about life, love and woman. Mum then went on further to say we must support local talent.

Last year, I finally managed to locate Onion Tears after discovering Shubnum Khan on Twitter. I was pretty excited to read this book especially as I had begun following her on Twitter. The cover was very beautiful and very eye catching, and a comment from Shanthini Naidoo on the cover did make the reader in me hungry to devour this book.

The story is based on an Indian family in South Africa, especially seen through the eyes of 3 generations of woman in this family, the grandmother, her daughter and her granddaughter. The main themes explored in this novel are those of love, loss and life. Its a very touching story that everyone can identify with.Life is not always what it seems and the past has a sneaky way of creeping up upon us. The story pulls you in and make you feel like you know the characters personally and you can feel their emotions.Society and the role of woman are also explored in this novel.

The clever use of culture and cooking ties up this lovely novel that is simply so realistic.Shubum is truly a great wordsmith and writes with such passion which is clearly evident in this novel.

Thank you Shubum for penning such a interesting read, I cant wait for your next book and to meet you in person.
ps. Go out and buy a copy of ONION TEARS 🙂

Birthdays :-)

Standard

My birthday was yet again another fabulous day celebrating my life with my nearest and dearest.

I was woken at midnight from a gazzillion facebook, twitter and BBM messages. I was so surprised how truly loved I am by so many. I even got a birthday tweet from @Micasa that really made my day. Mum bought me a yummilicious Tiramisu cake from Woolworths that each morsel was divine.

Since my special day fell on a Saturday it was a perfect excuse to party all weekend. Plans that evening included dinner at Adega to sample some of Chef Ismail Arbee’s fab food then onto Newscafe in Umhlanga for cocktails and red velvet cupcakes with friends.

At Adega I was treated so special with a dish made especially for me, and a group of singing waiters bringing me dessert. As I write this I can still taste those yummy flavours of the sauce Ismail made (chilli, coconut and lime)

When I got to Newscafe my friends were already there, I was so happy they braved the cold and rain to spend my special day with me. Aftervloads of cocktails from Long Island Ice teas, flaming lamborginis to a Mexican death wish I had it all. It was my night a night of fun, laughter and great memories.

The party people within us urged us to go to Vogue where two of my fav Dj’s @djdeong and @ryanthedj. We danced the night away in heels and after having a few suitcases and a fishbowl.

I recieved so many amazing and thoughtful gifts, I know I am truly blessed. I still continued recieving gifts till the last week of April.April is most defo a birthday month of celebrations to me. Thanks to all the awesome people who made my day so special. xxx
