Shantaram an awesome gift

Standard

A couple of months ago for my birthday I was given this amazing book as a gift. My love of books was the reason this book was given to me by a friend as its his favourite book .The smell of a new book is heaven and going into a bookshop ia defo my kind of heaven.

Several friends and myself were pretty impressed with my recieving this book as gift . Everybody who has ever read has said its becomes one of their favourite books including the gift bearer. Its a pretty thick book with amazing hues of blue and red on the book cover.”if fate doesnt make you laugh, then you just dont get the joke”

I coming from Indian hertitage love all things Indian and love reading books based in India . This novel is a based on a true life encounter of man on the run and his journey through India. I loved the descriptions of life in India from the slums , to the villages and the super wealthy. The book is full of love, drama, gangs, crime ,culture and friendship. This book makes one reflect on their own lives and the people who walk through our lives. “Mistakes are like bad loves the more you learn from them the more you wish they never happened”

India is truely a magical place , one does get seduced by the sights the sounds and the colours . I hope someday to visit India for more than a 3month stint , maybe I will do an Eat ,Pray ,Love Journey just like a famous SA celebrity Shashi Naidoo.Maybe i will find my Raja in India.”Sometimes we love with nothing more than hope”

So thank you Mr X for sharing your favourite book with me and enriching my world with the wisdom found in Shantaram. They say a picture speaks a thousand words but in opinion a book gives me a glimpse into your soul .

This book has some of the most amazing and memorable quotes I have ever come across. If you are looking for a book to add to your reading list add Shantaram.”Luck is what happens to you when fate gets tired of waiting ” Shantaram…..Namaste.

My year of loss 2012

Standard

This year has been the most emotional year of my life . Losing my Dad on New Years morning was such a tremendous loss to my family , we are still coming to terms with this tragedy . On Sunday 1st July another heart breaking tragedy occured in my family with my 16year old cousin in London committing suicide . I feel as if another part of my heart has died. There are no words to describe the feeling of the heart . I found this quote which sums up what i feel ” Tears are the words the heart can not express”.

There are a million questions , a million memories and a million tears. I found this poem in a card someone had sent to us during Dad’s funeral and it seemed very appropriate so i thought i would share it .

Letter from HEAVEN:

To my dearest Family , Somethings I would like to say , but firstly I have to say I have arrived safely. I am writing this from Heaven, here where I dwell with God above. Here there is no more tears just eternal love. Please done be unhappy cause I am out of sight, remember I am with you morning , noon and night. On the day I had to leave this earth , God picked me up and hugged me said ” I welcome you ,it is good to have you back yu were missed while you were gone. As for your dearest family they will be here later on. I needed you badly you are part of my plan.”

Dont be afraid to cry it is good to relieve the pain ,remember there can be no flowers without the rain. There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb. When you are walking down the street and you got me on your mind, I am walking in your footsteps only half a step behind you AND when its time for you to go from your body to be free REMEMBER YOU ARE NOT GOING ………YOU ARE COMING TO ME ……. REST IN PEACE MY DARLING DIAMOND PRIYANKA.LOVE YOU ALWAYS AND FOREVER……”The HEART that has truly LOVED never FORGETS ”

Has the digital age robbed us of our emotions

Standard

With the tragic passing away of my baby cousin this question of Technology , i started questioning this digi age. This morning I placed an order for Flowers to be sent for the funeral on Friday .It was so hassle free and easy even the personalised message seemed so impersonal.

I later had to send an email with a message for the funeral yet again it seemed so cold and impersonal. It seems the world has become a place where we hide our emotions via a screen.I later recalled a BBM convo with Mr X about ithe possibilities of falling for someone you have never met but just had contact with over a social network. Is it really possible to fall in love with someone you have neve met just by having an email chat ? I personally have my reservations on this matter as its so easy to hide behind a screen and say things we want a person to hear/see. It is very easy to say yes me too , I love that book /movie /song . Yet when face to face it is much harder to hold a conversation and hide our facial expressions and body language. To fall for someone I believe it takes some time and a combination of communication methods to get to know a person and ultimately a face to face meeting either elevates the relationship or ends it. Just imagine trying to relay a funny story over an email or BBM or Whatsapp , there is no facial expresions no gestures and the only response one can give is a LOL and a laughing face icon. I personally am one of those people who is a Storyteller with a million stories so I dont think i could convey all these stories in just a text or email or in a Tweet .

It seems gone are the days of the art of conversations , letters and cards. Using all sorts of digital means we do hide behind a screen , its very easy to pretend to be someone else and have a conversation without the other person getting to know us.I recall as a little kiddie loving the feeling of opening a letter or card sent to me now I dont even get my cellphone account sent to me as its sent as an email. Gosh I suddenly feel old saying this but yes I miss the good old days of communication.

This then leads me onto another train of thought and the safety of using social networks. Right up till very recently there have been cases in the News of young girls meeting older men on the net posing to be younger guys. Some of these stories did not turn out well. So how safe are we really ? Is it so easy to become a different person online and create a whole different personality ,steal an image ? Sadly the answer is yes …

So hence I have come to realise that our emotions have been stolen by this New Techno Age and yes I miss the good old days…

books vs kindles

Standard

I have a passionate love affair with books. Walking into a bookshop is my kind of Heaven. One of my dreams in life is to open a bookshop with an attached coffeeshop. The greatest gift I could be given is a book. From a very young age both my parents encouraged reading and always bought us books as kids. I often dream of having a library or a reading room in my own home filled with books I have collected over time, my own little Shangrila.

The smell of a new book is intoxicating and turning crisp clean pages a big turn on . So last night in a Tweet converstion with a friend and MC about the much acclaimed Fifty Shades of Grey Trilogy , we were both told why are we not using Kindle or an E-reader. My response was about the smell and clean crisp pages to which I was told Kindle is a crisp clean page everytime . I further prompted MC about his reasoning to which he replied he just wants people to stop chopping trees. So this got me thinking about books vs Kindle , well the merits included being able to carry around a ton of books at the same time without adding to the weight of my already heavy handbag, buying books immediately (bank balance beware), not been embaressed to buy books like Fifty Shades of Grey, books never out of stock (Onion Tears/Holy Cow), saving our environment to leave a legacy for our children are just some of the positives about switching over . Now for the cons I personally love the feel of a new book , the smell , the passing of books onto others, personal inscriptions inside books, walking into a book shop to browse, the reading of bedtime stories ……

This topic has really got me thinking since last night so thank you MC. So I guess I need to try out the kindle /E-reader/iPad as a carrier for my books. Come to think of it in Fifty Shades of Grey , Christian gives Ana an iPad will a downloaded library of classic books (how romantic !) , several of his playlists and photos of them together. I would so love a man to do that for me 🙂

In the UK last year several libraries closed down ,was this the cause of digi media taking over. I love books , but I love technology too so hence I am sitting on the fence with this one until I try one of the many digital forms of reading. So if anyone is wanting to help me figure this one out feel free to buy/give me any of the abovementioned digital items so that I could be swayed to think and act more green about my future book choices. Ciao for now my techno loving friends……….

my first time …..

Standard

My first time I came to stumble upon an iPhone I had such mixed feelings. I clearly recall been very adament that I didnt want a touch screen phone . My upgrade was overdue on my cellphone contract and I had to make a choice of a new phone when given the option of the iPhone 2G I was not very impressed as very simple functions were not available , I was told by the attentive assistants to take the phone as new software was been developed all the time .

So after a 3 month of ohhh and ahhhing situation I gave in and got it . My first night with my new gadget was nerve wrecking it wasnt like any of the other phones I had before. It had a million functions and no booklet for help but rather a CD . The touch screen was another nightmare on its own. So I took on this challenge and soon I was in love with my iPhone . I became at work the person that everyone spoke to about cell phones , I was even offered a job by one of the major UK MOBILE phone operators as they were impressed with my knowledge of phones (not bad for a girl).

My new iPhone became almost like another limb , one I could not live without. It amazed me every new app , every download , the instant accesss to my email. I recall one Saturday while shopping in Canary Wharf I recieved an email a very detailed one from a potential member of staff we were trying to recruit. In the middle of the mall I read this email where the guy had accpeted the job and was able to pass on the info to my senior manager who was very impressed that on a Saturday afternoon I was still working .

I could not sing my praises of this new phone anymore that is until the new 3G came out and took iPhones to a whole a whole new level . And then tragedy struck , my touch screen started going all fuzzy on me . The horror of not having my iPhone got me on the phone immediately with my service provider who provided me with details of my nearest Apple Store and how to book an appointement. My poor phone like a child needed to be taken in to see the iPhone doctor but an appointment needed to be made first
online . I did this immediately and was given an appointment for later that day. I hurried took my precious phone in its box , swapped simcard into another phone and went off to the Apple Store.

Using the other phone felt rather strange in my hand and I was already missing my phone and all its wonder. Once I got into the store I was greeted by an Apple “Nurse” who took down my details , booked me in and directed me to the waiting area. Looking around me there were lots of other worried faces waiting clutching their Apple products awaiting their name to be called on the large screens in store. Ten minutes of waiting I was called . the assistant was well spoken and very helpful . I explained my problem to him and he listened and nodded like a good doctor to my symptoms .

After I finished he then diagnosed my condition and gave me my “REMEDY”. Without any major hassle of sending my phone off for repairs that would take weeks , he immediately gave me a new Handset. I was totally gobsmacked and so happy to have my beloved phone back alive and working properly.

It totally amazed me how effiecent , friendly and helpful the staff at the Apple Store were. Wish all companies would send their staff be observe and be trained by Apple Staff.Yet again I sang the praises of Apple and work thus convincing more people to consider iPhones. However after using iPhones for 4 YEARS on my return to SA I gave my phone to my brother as I didnt have a job and could not afford to have an iPhone on pay as you go package.I so missed my iPhone and am know a BB user . In the UK all iPhone cotracts provided unlimited data which is great especially to be able to access all the great features of this phone . iPhone how I miss thee…..one sweet day we shall be united again……and yes you gave me an amazing first time……..Ciao for now tech loving people…….

my life would suck without you….

Standard

Listening to Kelly Clarkson earler this week prompted the inspiration of this blog.So i thought about it and realised how much my life would suck without technology. Am sure all of you who have read my blogs know about my digital addiction.Indeed i would be truly lost and my life would suck without the access to technology. My handbag is a testimony to my addiction external harddrive, memory sticks and now a recent addition of a fully charged spare Blackberry battery.I kid you not i am so afraid of not been connected to the world and missing out on something.Lucky for me my friends are also very smitten with age of technology, one who recently celebrated her birthday said she would be so upset if hubby bought her jewllery when all she wanted was a new external hardrive. See guys yes we do love sparkly gifts but we are also considering digital gifts now . HI everybody my name is Verushka and yes i am addicted to the digital era.I cannot live without my phone and internet access.I did go cold turkey twice but the side effects were terrible mood swings, depression, anger, withdrawl from others are just a few of the symptoms i experienced.Though an addiction is meant to be bad i love mine and cant seem to get enough of this digital drug.ciao for now my digital addicts and in the words of Kelly Clarkson my life would suck without you

Words dont come easy….

Standard

I cant imagine my life without music. As far back as i can recall music has been apart of my life during happy and sad times.Music has the amazing ability to transport to a moment in time and remind us of a once special person and the way we felt then bitters sweet memories I call them.

I clearly recall in High school in the 90’s we would make mix tape of love songs for a loved one. And then the digital age moved on and we started geting CD’s with better quality sound and then we started making mixed CD’s. A couple months ago I watched a great movie on Dstv called Textuality. This movie was a great example of Technology in our lives . The central theme of the movie was how people conduct relationships on their phones with BBM and emails. There is a romantic undertone in the movie which is fresh and intriguing. A conversation between 2 guy friends in the movie on how to win back a girl was hysterical especially when the friend suggests making a mixtape to which the other one replies that is so 80’s so hence they come up with the idea of a mix USB( someone still owes me 1). i thought what a totally genuis idea so uptodate with technology ! I recommend you watch this movie if you are in love with technology and seem to manage all your relationships via technology lol.

So in keeping with the music theme , I tend to make up music playlists on my phone each one different depending on my mood. How amazing is this option a list of songs from different artists all on one playlist ! makes me feel like i am a DJ.This is such an easy way to carry music around instead of tons of CDS.

I have decided to share one of my playlists with you today.I believe every song has a meaning and often tells a person what we are too afraid to tell them .

My playlist is dedicated to Mr X .I met him earlier this year in March at teh 80’s concert .He immediately caught my attention as he was very friendly and seemed to have an interesting personality. I must admit i was intrigued by him. When Rick Astley came on and i saw him singing his heart out I KNEW instantly I wanted to get to know him .He is like no other guy I have met in South Africa since coming back from London he is interesting , intriguing and we have alot in common. But he is a very damaged soul from a past relationship which has left him very unsure about relationships. I just wish at times I could wave my magic wand and make him whole again so he can feel love again and learn to trust .So Mr X and I started to get to know each other very much similair to the movie Textuality, he would often randomly sent me songs which i believed was his way of telling me his story or letting me in……….So this playlist is dedicated to Mr X , I know i aint your type and you no longer speak to me , but i think you are amazing a breathe of fresh air. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to get to know you and get a glimpse of your wonderful soul……….
PLAYLIST :

1) Rick Astley – Never gona give you up

2) One Republic – Secrets

3) John Legend – Ordinary People

4) David Gray – This Years Love

5) Avril Lavigne – Complicated

6)Kelly Clarkson – Stronger

7) The Wanted – Glad you came

8) Whitney Houston – One moment in time

9) Drake – Take Care

10) Goyte ft Kimbra – Somebody that I used to know

This playlist is actually one that is one my phone and I do listen to it very often. Soppy romantic I know but I CANT HELP IT .

Music does feed our soul , offers us comfort during difficult times and reminds us of amazing people and times we have experienced. As someone famous once said “if music be the food of love , play on ”

Have an awesome day my lovelies …..keep the music alive always …… ciao…….I

What every girl loves?

oOnline shopping has become the latest addiction of us lovely ladies. Earlier this week at work a friend who is been introduced to the digital age made her first online purchase. She was totally over the moon with how easy it was to do this transaction. And the other interesting thing was she purchased and Ebook , i was so totally amazed at how my friend is taking to the digital age like a duck to water. So it seems our lil digital club at work is slowly growing with more having Blackberrys , Samsung Tablets and Netbooks. It makes me feel like a proud mum moment seeing how fast the girls at work are keeping up with technology.

In the mean time , i have been shopping in the Apps store on my Samsung Tablet, I have been amazed at the amount of free apps and like a kid in a candy shop i been downloading them. From gorgeous wallpapers of my beleoved London to recipe books , to learn Arabic , to a library of books for reading (yes MC will be giving it a try ). The options seem endless and makes one just want continually download. The best part of this is that all these apps are free 🙂 Bargain and free are words which make me very happy .

But then I have 2 problems a) I dont have a credit card to shop online b) I dont have an unlimited Data Plan. So after my online booking drama ( ticket has been booked sponsored by bro and yes and the price was still the same this morning) i have been considering getting a credit card for these purchases. As for problem B a work friend also suggested going to Mugg and Bean for their free WiFi and a lovely coffee then spend a few hours in download heaven.Just the thought of downloading unlimited excites me like a fat kid who loves cake

In the UK virtually all shopping can be done online from food to clothing to jewellery to home improvement to leisure. Hopefully this trend catches on here in SA but before it can we need affordable and reliable internet accessfor this to work effectively.

So come on internet providers think about making access more affordable and reliable so then us girls can do what we do best ……….Shop at home without having to brave the madness of the mall….Have a lovely day digi addicts

Modern Communication

Standard

So I found myself at the airport yesterday with only 1 battery charged which should have been enough till I got home. But alas delayed flights and dramas at the airport didnt help my battery life situation.

Thankfully for me I had my fully charged Samsung Tablet which not only provided me with internet access but occupied me with books to read and games to play . Then i realised how would i be able to tell my brother where to pick me up on arrival so hence genuis me decided the best would be to email him as he has a Blackberry .

So on finally arriving at Durban , i proceeded to the Taxi drop off zone whipped out my Tablet and emailed brother dearest where to pick meup from. I did get a few strange looks as my tablet has a keyboard . I did notice a few people kinda peep over my shoulder to see what i had and what I was doing.

Modern Communication , I love thee with my body , mind and soul . You keep me calm , offer solutions , cure my boredoms, make me smile. For all these reasons and many more I love thee with all I have.

Have a gorgeous week all my darlings………………………
